‘Benidorm Integrates with the PID’ Project
‘Benidorm DTI Integrates with the PID’ is one of the most ambitious initiatives undertaken by the destination to date in terms of the digital transformation of the tourism sector. The project, co-funded with €3.1 million from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), aims to fully connect the destination’s local technology platform, Benidorm CORE, with the Intelligent Destinations Platform (PID) of the Spanish State Secretariat for Tourism.
Areas of Action
1. Unified Destination Portal
A platform offering integrated information and personalised services that will generate value at three levels:
For visitors, by improving the tourist experience before, during and after their stay.
For the local tourism sector, by providing access to advanced tourism intelligence based on real-time data, enabling businesses to adapt their offering, improve competitiveness and anticipate demand trends.
For destination management, by enabling effective interoperability with the national PID, evidence-based decision-making, and greater sustainability and efficiency in the management of tourist flows.
2. Location Intelligence System
It will enable the integration, analysis and visualisation of geospatial data from different sources on maps for the intelligent analysis of tourism impacts. It includes a Geographic Information System (GIS), a geoportal and a map viewer.
3. Water Resources and Water Alerts Module
For monitoring the status of water bodies and managing water resources, including monitoring drought or water scarcity events, floods, heatwaves and cold spells, as well as environmental indicators.
4. Visitor Flow Measurement System
To monitor and control the occupancy levels of different areas of the destination in real time, optimising space management and improving the visitor experience.
5. Smart Parking and Access Control System
Through the installation of sensors and cameras, the system will monitor in real time the availability of parking spaces for People with Reduced Mobility (PRM) and the city’s park-and-ride facilities. It will optimise parking availability and make it easier for users to locate available spaces.
6. Multimedia Content Creation
For the promotion and dissemination of Benidorm’s tourism, cultural, heritage, accessibility and experiential assets.
With this project, Benidorm—the world’s first certified Smart Tourism Destination in 2018—reaffirms its commitment to a smart, sustainable tourism model fully integrated into the national network of destinations, while consolidating its position as a benchmark for the digital transformation of the tourism sector.
Intelligent Destinations Platform (IDP
The Intelligent Destinations Platform (PID) is Spain’s major tourism technology infrastructure, promoted by the State Secretariat for Tourism and developed by SEGITTUR (State Mercantile Company for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies) within the framework of the Smart Tourism Destinations (DTI) model. It functions as a common data space that connects destinations within the DTI Network and links them with the General State Administration, based on shared standards that ensure tourism information can be exchanged reliably and compared consistently.
Its purpose is to transform the vast amount of data generated by tourism activity—from public administrations, businesses and the destination itself—into useful knowledge for decision-making, preventing this information from becoming fragmented or isolated in systems that cannot communicate with one another. Ultimately, the PID acts as the digital backbone of Spanish tourism, providing a shared infrastructure that each destination can rely on without losing its autonomy in managing its own affairs.
The platform’s main objectives are to:
Ensure interoperability between destinations’ local technology systems and the national infrastructure, enabling them to share information based on common criteria.
Standardise and harmonise tourism data in accordance with shared standards, ensuring its quality and reusability.
Provide a common tourism data repository that integrates diverse sources and avoids duplication of efforts.
Generate tourism intelligence through advanced analytics and large-scale data processing to support destination management.
Drive digital transformation, sustainability and competitiveness across the Spanish tourism system as a whole.
Strengthen governance and evidence-based decision-making at both local and national levels.
