The Advisory Council of Urban Scene endorses the project to adapt the public space opposite Virgen del Sufragio cemetery

27 October 2017
El Consejo Asesor de Escena Urbana avala el proyecto para adecuar el espacio público frente al cementerio Virgen del Sufragio

The architects propose that this space operate as an extension of the cemetery, which opens to the city

The Urban Scene Advisory Council has endorsed the project to adapt the public space prior to the Virgen del Sufragio cemetery in which a fast food establishment was previously located and was partially demolished a few months ago. The project proposes to extend the current space of the cemetery giving a new entrance that in turn serves to open the graveyard to the city.

Thus, the proposal commissioned by the Council itself from the municipal architect Rafael Landete and Jose Manuel Escobedo - both members of this advisory body - includes a space with large blocks of concrete that in the upper part function as gardens, while in the walls of these structures the installation of columbarium is proposed.

The municipal architect explained that the proposal projects a central space of transition, and that the unevenness of the plot is saved by stairs and ramps. Also, another gateway to the cemetery is added to the existing one, where vehicles and passers-by are currently accessible. All the new space would work with the same schedule as the cemetery.

In the design of the project has been integrated the structures of the previous construction that were preserved, and which house a warehouse and accessible public toilets that serve the cemetery. This adaptation has a budget close to 210,000 euros. After the presentation of the drafters of the project, the mayor, Toni Perez, has indicated that the idea is to include a line in the 2018 budget to undertake this action.
