The works of adaptation of the land have already begun

Benidorm will create 50 new urban gardens next to the center 'Pepita Esperanza' in La Cala

03 July 2019
Benidorm creará 50 nuevos huertos urbanos junto al centro ‘Pepita Esperanza’ de La Cala

Benidorm City Council is adapting a municipal plot next to the municipal center 'Pepita Esperanza Llinares Llorca' in La Cala to create around 50 new urban gardens. These gardens will be added "to the 22 that already work in Italy street since the beginning of 2017", and like in these the adjudicatarios of the parcels "will have to practice the ecological agriculture and for autoconsumo", as it has pointed out the councilor of Medio Environment, Mónica Gómez.

Gómez recalled that "in the first phase of urban gardens, the demand tripled the number of available plots", so "new locations have been sought to advance this project". The chosen location is a municipal plot so far "in disuse and did not offer an image consistent with the environment."

The councilor of Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, explained that after adapting the land and installing the potable water network, at this moment "we are introducing the vegetal earth" to later "implant a system that avoids water losses". In addition, it is planned "to place shadow, generate shadow zones with the planting of ornamental trees and create pathways to walk, and plant ornamental trees."

De Zárate has detailed that this action has involved an investment of 47,865.40 euros and that the execution period is estimated at a month and a half.

For its part, the owner of Environment has advanced that "the application process for the plots will be opened after the summer, and that in principle the same award criteria will be maintained as in the first phase of the gardens". In this way, priority will be given to "registered residents over 65 years of age, residents in situations of unemployment and persons with functional diversity".
