In addition, the archaeologists Feliciana Sala and Jesús Moratalla and the engineer Marta Peña will present the Tossal musealization project

Benidorm plans workshops, guided tours and a historical recreation in the 'castellum' for the European Conference on Archeology

The Department of Historical Heritage has completed the program of activities with which the Roman 'castellum' of Tossal de la Cala will participate for the first time in the European Conference on Archaeology, directed by the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) and which is being held from June 17 to 19 simultaneously in 46 countries of the continent.

The councillor of Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, has indicated that "the program combines recreational and informative activities aimed at a wide spectrum of the public since we want to involve the entire population in these European Archeology Conferences." Thus, they have planned “in the same site, two free workshops of ceramics and Roman mosaics for the little ones; guided tours of the site with an archaeologist; and a historical recreation of how the Roman legions lived and organized themselves”.

Pellicer has specified that “both the workshops and the guided tours will be carried out over the three days of the conference, with the workshops in the morning and the visits in the morning and evening; while the historical re-enactment by the Hispania Romana Association, an activity that is coming to our Tossal for the first time, has been scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, the 18th”.

In addition to these activities, the councillor explained that "we believe that these European Archeology Conferences are the best time for citizens to learn all the details of the next Tossal de la Cala musealization project, which will culminate the recovery and enhancement of the fort; a project that has been included in the Tourism Sustainability Plan and that has European funding”.

To do this, on Friday, June 17 at 8:00 p.m., the archaeologists Feliciana Sala and Jesús Moratalla, responsible for the successive excavation campaigns at the site and who have taken part in the different interventions carried out in the 'castellum', will present the keys to this musealization together with the engineer Marta Peña, who has also participated in the preparation of the project.

After inviting the resident population and tourists who are in Benidorm during those days to participate in these activities, Pellicer recalled that "these European Archeology Conferences help us to better and better position our 'castellum', the Roman fort from the time of sertorianas wars of the Peninsula that more information has given researchers to date”.

"These Conferences -he stressed- are a platform for public projection with which to give visibility and relevance to archaeological sites, in line with the work that the City Council has been carrying out for years, investing in the recovery and enhancement of historical heritage local own resources and also those obtained from other administrations, mainly European funds”.
