Only specific problems have been registered in Els Tolls coinciding with the access and exit of schools

Benidorm responds well on the first day of the traffic cut on Beniardá avenue

15 September 2022
Benidorm responde bien en la primera jornada de corte de la avenida Beniardá

Benidorm has responded well on the first day of the traffic cut in the upper part of Beniardá avenue. The mayor, Toni Pérez; the Councilor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate; technicians in this area; a command of the Local Police; and a person in charge of the management company of the traffic light network; have followed from the first hour the behaviour of traffic entering the city from the Smart Office, where the city's traffic cameras are monitored.

In addition, in all communication nodes, there has been a police presence.

The mayor explained that “broadly speaking, traffic has been fluid at the main entrances to the city along Juan Pablo II Avenue and Comunidad Europea; registering only punctual problems in the latter, coinciding with the arrival and departure times of the schools in Els Tolls neighbourhood”. The fact that most families have chosen  Belgica Avenue as their exit route after leaving their minors in these schools has affected traffic entering from Comunidad Europea  Avenue, a situation that has been remedied by reinforcing the police presence at this point and that in no case has it involved waiting for more than 4 minutes.

To prevent this situation from repeating itself in the coming days, "an appeal has been made to families so that, as far as possible, they opt for alternative exit itineraries to Belgium Avenue, such as Holland Avenue and Austria Street to reach Alfonso Puchades, or Italia and Virgen del Rocío streets to reach Orxeta street”. Some itineraries that "already existed previously and perhaps due to ignorance they have not used today".
To reinforce this call, "we have contacted the management of Puig Campana and Els Tolls schools and Fontanelles municipal nursery school to send them all the information about these alternative itineraries and to pass it on to the families".

The mayor has also reported the "good functioning of the operation of the school transport to Salt de l'Aigua", which has operated "on time" and "with total normality".

On the other hand, he has advanced that "there will be a police reinforcement in the Camí del Llandero when detecting on this first day the entry of vehicles not authorized for this itinerary, reserved only for residents and emergency vehicles."

"Except for these two exceptions, Benidorm has responded efficiently and normally to the colossal challenge of cancelling what is probably the main entrance to Benidorm: Beniardá Avenue, which on an ordinary day supports the passage of more than 30,000 vehicles", has pointed. Likewise, he has added that “the behaviour of the drivers, who in a very high percentage have followed all the recommendations and itineraries proposed by the City Council, has been key so that the traffic has worked correctly during the day; and of".

Toni Pérez has stressed that "the City Council, as well as the optional management of the burial works, has made an important effort, both material and human, to try to minimize the condition that supposes cancelling the entrance of the avenue for 10 months Beniardá, adopting measures that make traffic more agile in the rest of the entrances to Benidorm through Poniente and Levante”. Thus, he recalled that "in addition to the adaptation works at the Salt de l'Aigua roundabout or Virgen del Rocío and Italia streets, a roundabout has been created on Ricardo Bayona avenue in order to speed up access circulation and exit through Vicente Pérez Devesa avenue; new park-and-ride car parks have been created in Levante and Poniente areas to exceed 7,000 spaces; and the asphalting, connections and lighting around the Camí del Llandero have been improved”.

Lastly, he has indicated that “the entire mobility device, which will operate while the underground work on Beniardá Avenue lasts, is likely to vary depending on the needs or eventualities that are detected”; and has advanced that "from the City Council we will continue to insist that FGV cut off rail traffic between the two TRAM stations in Benidorm in order to prevent Camí del Llandero from being affected by the lowering of the level crossing barriers".
