Benidorm improves road signage and road safety throughout the municipality

Benidorm City Council, through its Department of Mobility, has launched a project to renew road signage on the municipality's urban roads to improve road safety. This project is part of the +CERCA 2023 Plan for Infrastructure and Municipal Assistance Grants.

The project, drafted by the Municipal Technical Services Office, includes work on Benidorm's urban roads and seeks to "respond to the urgent need for maintenance in particularly sensitive areas, such as schools and medical centres," explained the councillor for the department, Francis Muñoz. In this regard, the project's technical report states that the need for maintenance "poses a risk to pedestrians and drivers, so its improvement will directly result in greater safety for all road users."

These works have a budget of €573,984.38, of which €439,738 is being provided by the Alicante Provincial Council through the aforementioned +CERCA 2023 Plan grant program. The remaining €134,246.38 is being paid by the City Council.

One of the latest projects to be carried out was in the central area of Benidorm, at intersections of avenues such as Alfonso Puchades, Jaime I, and Tomás Ortuño Street. This area was visited this morning by Councillor Francis Muñoz, accompanied by municipal technicians and representatives from the company in charge of carrying out the works. "The goal is to protect and provide greater road safety by improving horizontal signage at intersections and optimising vehicle turns given the increase in traffic during the summer," said Muñoz.

The Councillor for Urban Scene and Mobility also indicated that thanks to this investment, "we achieved significant savings in social costs, as well as in potential property liabilities arising from poor signage. Therefore, the project was drafted to replace all signage that was in an undesirable state throughout the municipality."

The City Council, Muñoz explained, had been carrying out maintenance work on street and public road signs through annual contracts, but since August 2022, this maintenance could not be carried out due to insufficient resources. "We had reports indicating the need for this maintenance, and now, in addition to carrying it out, we have integrated new roundabout signage, which is already included in the new proposals from the Directorate General of Traffic, so once again, we are pioneers in improving mobility."
