Benidorm brings 100% renewable energy to all municipal facilities and buildings

06 October 2017
Benidorm lleva energía 100% renovable a todas las instalaciones y edificios municipales

The City Council thus avoids the emission of more than 6,000 tons of CO2 annually

All the electricity consumed by municipal buildings in Benidorm since last October 1 "has 100% renewable origin," said the mayor, Toni Pérez, who has detailed that from now the consumption of the City Hall "will generate zero emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere, avoiding the emission of more than 6,000 tons annually "of this gas.

The mayor explained that "the contract has been made in a derivative way to the mercantile Iberdrola through the Central Purchasing of Diputación de Alicante," and has clarified that although the cost of this clean energy is higher than that of conventional electricity , in just a few months this relative increase in the invoice will be offset by the implementation of new energy saving measures.

Pérez stressed that the implementation of 100% energy in all municipal public centers "contributes to a more sustainable and livable environment," thus "following the important line of work that is being developed in this area and has recently used two first level recognitions ".

The mayor referred first to the second award achieved in the Week of Sustainability Mobility of the Generalitat Valenciana for safe school itineraries, as well as the award received yesterday from the Ministry of Environment at the 7th Sustainable Mobility Week. The mayor recalled that in this last one, Benidorm has obtained the second prize after being measured to more than 460 cities, among them the great capitals of the country.

As the mayor has moved, measures to promote sustainable mobility, coupled with the implementation of Wi-Fi pilot projects, beacons, efficient management of footprints and monitoring of water quality converge "into a clear idea of what we want for the Benidorm of tomorrow. "

Pérez stressed that this idea "of how Benidorm should be the future" is embodied in the strategy of Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development (DUSI), whose new call for assistance will be presented by the City Council, and necessarily involves making the city an Smart Tourist Destination (DTI).
