The works to make Tomás Ortuño street pedestrian will start after the Patron Saint Festivities

31 October 2017
Las obras de la nueva peatonalización de Tomás Ortuño arrancarán tras las Fiestas Patronales

The Government Board has awarded the works, which may end the traditional problems caused by the rains

The works in Tomás Ortuño Street in the section between La Garita and Limones will begin after the Patron Saint Festivals, according to the mayor, Toni Pérez, the Local Government Board has definitively awarded the works. The mayor recalled that this new work will cost 728,827.72 euros, which will be invested in the surface, in the basement of the street and in the installation of technological devices.

Sigma, which offered an improvement of 29.51%, will be in charge of executing this project, which includes closing San Antonio Street to traffic and important changes in traffic configuration in the area.

Pérez has indicated that they will maintain "the model, design and qualities" of the first phase -which was completed at the beginning of the year and that runs between the streets between Mercado and La Garita-, but changes are introduced for " greater and better mobility ". This will reverse the direction of traffic in Maravall and Marqués de Comillas streets. The first happens to be "ascent", while in Marqués de Comillas the circulation in one section will vary and it is not ruled out to implement the double in another. In addition, circulation also changes in Roldán and Puig Campana streets.

These changes will allow to level "the vehicles that enter and leave the center", and to divert to Maravall part of the traffic that today supports Los Almendros Avenue.

The mayor underlined that "a great technological and traffic signaling investment will be made" to "integrate the retractable access control pivots, which provide the traffic control of the center with greater control and safety". Pérez has asked for "apologies" to the neighbors because "some changes are required", although they will give "good results for its dynamics and that of the merchants".

Finally, he highlighted the important work that is going to be done in the subsoil to eliminate the traditional problems that the rain causes in Tomás Ortuño, and that have already been reduced significantly in the lower section of the street after the first phase of pedestrianization. With this second phase, he has indicated, "we completely solve the flooding that was in shops all along the street, there will be no large avenues of water, and we will have imperceptibly made something that was previously inevitable: get wet every time four drops fell in that stretch of water. Tomás Ortuño ".
