Benidorm will compete again this summer to revalidate the Green Flag of Ecovidrio's hotel sustainability

Benidorm optará de nuevo a la consecución de la Bandera Verde.

Benidorm will once again opt for the Green Flag that Ecovidrio awards every year and that rewards the efforts of the local hotel industry and town halls with the recycling of glass containers and the fight against climate change. The city was already the winner of this award last year and, therefore, will compete to revalidate the award.

Thus, this year 323 hotels in Benidorm will participate this summer in the fourth edition of the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes, an initiative launched by Ecovidrio, the non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass container waste in Spain. The campaign rewards the commitment of municipalities and hotels with the circular economy and glass recycling during the summer season.

The Green Flags Movement contemplates actions to respond to the notable increase in the generation of glass container waste in coastal areas caused by summer tourism. In summer, a third of the glass containers that are put into circulation are consumed, and close to 50% of the single-use glass container waste that is put on the market is generated by the hospitality sector, so its implication is key to generating a real transition towards a more circular and decarbonized model.

In this new edition of the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes, Ecovidrio will also carry out the second edition of the 'Barometer on hotel sustainability on our coasts', to analyze the presence of measures in favor of sustainability in the sector through four levers: efficient waste management, energy efficiency, responsible consumption, and water consumption.

The first edition of this barometer had the participation of 10,000 catering establishments. According to the data, 7 out of 10 establishments in the coastal areas already apply sustainability measures in the management of their businesses. Of the regions analyzed, the Valencian Community, with 7.08 out of 10, and Catalonia, with 7.06 out of 10, led the average, followed by the Region of Murcia (6.9), Illes Balears (6.6) and Andalusia (6.3).

This fourth edition of Green Flags is consolidated as one of the key initiatives of the Ecovidrio alliance with the hotel industry. At the national level, the campaign will be carried out this year in more than 140 coastal municipalities in five different autonomous communities and has the participation of more than 15,000 establishments. In total, this year, nine Green Flags will be delivered throughout the country.
