Benidorm moves a hundred luminaires from l'Aigüera Avenue and Herrerías street to educational, social and sports centres

Benidorm traslada un centenar de luminarias de la avenida de l’Aigüera y Hererrías a centros educativos, sociales y deportivos

Benidorm City Council, through the Department of Public Space, is undertaking the renovation of the street lamps and luminaires on Herrerías street and l'Aigüera Avenue, a work that is carried out thanks to the subsidy granted by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which contributes 50% of the cost and allows the implementation of LED technology and remote management systems in each of the new elements.

Benidorm achieved in 2020 a grant of three million euros from IDAE, from European funds, to improve the energy efficiency of more than 50% of public lighting. With this action, already started in various areas of the city, the aim is to achieve savings of 79% in energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by 2,442.78 tons per year. A project that encompasses 7,808 lights and 132 control centres.

At the moment, the lampposts and luminaires are being changed on the roads mentioned within the IDAE subsidized program. “We changed these luminaires three years ago thanks to direct investment from the Diputación's Energy Savings Plan and they already had LED technology. Now what we do is transfer them to public buildings to continue with economic and energy savings” explained the Councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate.

These lamposts are being removed are transferred to public centres such as La Torreta Social Center, Vasco Núñez school and sports facilities such as Palau d'Esports and Foietes. "These are investments made previously that we now transfer to other places to continue gaining in energy efficiency and economic savings" the mayor specified.
