Widening of sidewalks, narrower lanes, speed bumps, implementation of Zone 10 and traffic lights on the ground are some of the measures approved
Benidorm improves pedestrian traffic on school routes with works on Nicaragua and Azucenas streets
Benidorm City Council has initiated a new intervention in the campaign to improve the city's school itineraries, whose objective is to make said itineraries "safe, accessible and comfortable", as explained by the Councilor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zarate. This campaign is part of European Mobility Week.
The action is located on Nicaragua Street, at the height of the Miguel Hernández public school and consists of widening sidewalks in accordance with accessibility regulations, as well as adapting pedestrian crossings to it. One measure is the expansion of sidewalks, which had been requested by the educational community to increase the safety of the students of the centre.
Likewise, the mayor specified, "other measures have been adopted to calm traffic in the area, such as the narrowing of lanes and the placement of some speed bumps."
Similarly, work will also be carried out on Azucenas street, which will become a single platform road, with a pedestrian character, in which the pavement of the sidewalks and the asphalt of the road will be changed. "In this street, we want to give prominence to the pedestrian, as we have already done in many others in the city, and only the owners of the fords will have access to it," said González de Zárate, who specified that this road will be considered as Zone 10, that is, the maximum speed will be 10 km/h.
Some complementary works have also been carried out to improve mobility, as is the case of the roundabout that has been created at the confluence of Nicaragua, Ricardo Bayona and Cuba avenues "to calm the traffic that arrives from Vicente Pérez Devesa, especially now with the detours due to the works on Beniardá Avenue”.
As in Azucenas street, the section of Nicaragua street that falls on the Miguel Hernández school will also be Zone 10 and the rest of the street will be considered Zone 20. “Also the two pedestrian crossings that are at the exit of the school will be on elevations and traffic lights will be installed on the ground as reinforcement to give more protection to pedestrians”, the councillor pointed out.
The action on Nicaragua street will be completed in approximately two weeks and, once finished, the works on Azucenas street will begin
