Benidorm celebrates International Women's Day with a day full of commemorative events

08 March 2023
Celebración del 8 de Marzo

The Benidorm City Council celebrates today March 8, International Women's Day, with a program full of commemorative activities. A program that began on February 24 and will culminate on the 20th of this month with the Red Cross exhibition 'Women of the world'.

The commemoration of 8M had its prelude yesterday with the concert "Women Composers" by the students of the Municipal Professional Conservatory of Music at the Cultural Center. There, works by authors such as María Grever, Amy Beach, Augusta Holmes, Mel Bonis, Thérèse Brenet, De Fernande Decruck, Lili Boulanger, María Linnemann, Inés Thinle Castillo Serrano, Clara Schumann, Elga Wagner-Buhlmann and Sophie Defeutrelle were performed.

This morning the day began with the display from the balcony of the Town Hall of the commemorative banner for International Women's Day at ten o'clock in the morning, an act that was presided over by the mayor Toni Pérez and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragzozí, and that has had the presence of members of the local corporation.

Half an hour later, the exhibition of the Housewives of Benidorm 'Today is my day' was inaugurated at the Rosa de los Vientos, at the confluence of Gambo and Martínez Alejos streets. And the rest… too. Acts that have continued after noon with the inauguration of the exhibition 'Mimisma' by the illustrator Sandra Prim, which will be in the Espai d'Art of the City Council until March 17. Prim has said of her show that “illustrations are a way of expressing myself without hurting anyone. Some of them are more hooligans and others carry a message, but ultimately they are things that happen to women and that we share”.

In addition, the Anémona association has organized a social lunch at the Club Náutico starting at 2:00 p.m. In the afternoon, at 5:30 p.m., the Mujeres 2000 association programmed the play 'Laughter is the best medicine' at the La Torreta social center, and at 6:30 p.m. the Housewives association prepared at the Casa del Fester the 'Tribute Women of Benidorm' of poetry and song.

Ángela Zaragozí stressed that "it will be a complete day in commemoration of women in all areas" that will be completed starting tomorrow with a conference by Dr. Eva Ibeas at the Casa del Fester, a concert on Friday and a self-defense workshop on Saturday at the Palau d'Esports. Regarding this last activity, the councilor has invited everyone who can attend because it is important to know how to defend oneself against a possibly risky situation and that we have the tools to get out of trouble.

Zaragozí summarized, finally, that it has been made up of "more than a week with many transversal actions because what we want is to give relevance to the figure of women in all areas. It is a very diverse program that has turned out to be very diverse and we hope everyone could enjoy it”.
