Benidorm improves the lighting of Murcia street with the installation of 35 new lampposts

The project, co-financed with European funds, acts in this second phase on 3,512 light points to implement 'led' technology and remote management and save up to 79%

Benidorm City Council is finalizing the installation of 35 new lampposts on Murcia Street, an action that is part of the improvements of the second phase of the Energy Efficiency Program, which has a grant from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDEA).

With this action, it has been possible to improve street lighting and security. It was a busy area with very old streetlights and far from the pedestrian crossing, so it was a request from users when they found a street with poor lighting.

Twenty-eight new lampposts have already been installed and barely another seven remain, which will be installed in the coming days in the section between Ibiza and Jaén streets. This morning the councilors for Urban Scene, Citizenship Participation, and Street Cleaning, Francis Muñoz, Ana Pellicer, and Luis Navarro visited the area to check the progress of the work.

Muñoz explained that with the improvements of this second phase of the IDAE "we have proceeded to replace the streetlights and move them closer to the street pedestrian crossings to improve lighting since before they were further away and on many occasions the trees covered much of the light.

This second phase of the Energy Efficiency Program corresponds to the renovation of the lighting in the Levante area, which acts on 3,512 light points and 55 control centers, which means renewing 43.85% of the 7,660 light points that exist in the area. This will allow, at the end of the action, to reduce the installed power from 759.59 kW to 195.01 kW.

The works, which were awarded to the company Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctricas (SICE) for 2,527,730.45 euros, are 50% financed with European funds through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). Once the three phases are completed, the program will reach all the neighborhoods of the city.

Muñoz specified that "savings will reach up to 79%" and highlighted that the luminaires "also have a remote management system to change the intensity and power of the lights when necessary".

Muñoz recalled that the luminaires that are removed due to the Energy Efficiency Program "are being relocated in other places where they are necessary, such as rural roads or the Wastewater Treatment Plant."

Regarding this program, the mayor stressed that it is "very ambitious and will make Benidorm a more sustainable city and destination, while we follow the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and working side by side with the municipal technicians so that our political vocation translates into realities for the people of Benidorm”. In this sense, he recalled that since 2015 "this government began to implement savings and renewal policies that have given us magnificent results, as demonstrated by the continuous reduction in energy and electricity costs in recent years despite the brutal increase in the cost ”.

With the execution of this program, he has continued, "We reach all the neighborhoods of the city and we do it with innovation, technology, and cutting-edge lighting, with less light pollution and lower cost".

Project details

The global Energy Efficiency project, for the supply and installation of 'led' luminaires and their regulation and control, represents an investment of 6,014,578.57 euros. Just over two million were allocated to the first phase, another 2.5 to the second and the rest will go to the third.

The investment is 50% financed by the City Council and by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which gave Benidorm a grant for the development of the project 3,007,289.28 euros from European funds. When the project is finished, it will have worked in 7,808 light points of the 14,343 in the municipality, 54.44% of the municipal lighting.
