The Regional Council for Equality is committed to launching a joint audiovisual campaign against gender violence

11 June 2024
El Consejo Comarcal por la Igualdad apuesta por lanzar una campaña audiovisual conjunta contra la violencia de género

The Regional Council for Equality of the Marina Baixa wants to launch a joint audiovisual campaign against gender violence. This was addressed at the monthly meeting of the organization held yesterday in Benidorm, in which the councillors of the area and Equality technicians from the Municipalities of l'Alfàs del Pi, Altea, Benidorm, Callosa d'en Sarrià, Finestrat, La Nucia participated. , Polop, La Vila Joiosa and the Commonwealth of Marina Baixa.

The councillor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, explained that “it is essential to raise awareness among citizens about the reality surrounding gender violence and to inform them about the tools that public administrations and different organizations make available to victims and their environments.”.

After the experience of the campaign on non-sexist toys promoted by Benidorm which the rest of the municipalities in the region joined last Christmas, “the municipalities of the Council have considered it very interesting to continue carrying out joint awareness actions to expand the radius of reach and be much more effective.”

Once the foundations for this joint work have been laid, the proposals for this audiovisual awareness campaign will be presented at an upcoming meeting.

At the end of yesterday's meeting, Zaragozí thanked all the attendees for their attendance and participation, as well as her commitment to continue working together for and for the region to achieve an egalitarian society free of sexist violence.

Minute of silence

The Benidorm City Council has observed a minute of silence today as a sign of rejection and condemnation of the last two cases of murders due to sexist violence confirmed in our country which have ended the lives of two women, aged 51 and 55, and the son of one of them, 26. The silent rally took place at the door of the City Hall and was led by the first deputy mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the mayor of Equality accompanied by numerous members of the Municipal Corporation.

In the first case, which occurred in the province of Barcelona, the victim was a 51-year-old woman who had been missing since April 19. The woman was allegedly murdered by her partner. She had two minor children from this marriage and there were no previous complaints of gender violence against the alleged aggressor, who has been in preventive detention since May 11 as a suspect in the murder.

The second crime confirmed in the last hours occurred in the municipality of Benaguasil, in the province of Valencia. This is a 55-year-old woman who was allegedly shot to death by her partner on June 7.

The man also murdered the woman's son, a 26-year-old young man, with the same shotgun before taking his own life. There were also no previous complaints of violence.
With the confirmation of these cases, the number of women murdered by violence against women in Spain has risen to 14 so far this year and 1,258 since 2003, when the statistics began. The number of orphaned minors due to this cause in Spain amounts to 13 in 2024 and 446 since registration began in 2013.

The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log.

This service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, in 52 languages.
