Primary and secondary schools in Benidorm receive 246,000 euros from the Generalitat to begin air conditioning classrooms

Twenty public schools, secondary schools and educational centres in Benidorm have received €246,000 in funding from the Valencian Regional Government (Generalitat Valenciana) to carry out urgent HVAC improvements at their facilities, enhancing thermal comfort for both students and teaching staff ahead of the start of the new school year in September. The funding forms part of the extraordinary plan announced just a few days ago by the President of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, aimed at ensuring schools have the resources needed to undertake these works before the beginning of the 2026–2027 academic year. Individual grants range from €5,000 to €25,000 per school and will later be complemented through the EduClima Plan, which is expected to complete the installation of comprehensive HVAC systems.

Mayor Toni Pérez explained that "Benidorm's educational centres have already received the allocated funding to launch these HVAC projects, with €109,500 distributed among the city's thirteen nursery and primary schools and the Adult Education Centre, and a further €136,000 allocated to the five secondary schools and the Official School of Languages." He also noted that "the City Council had already taken the initiative several days ago to identify the needs of each educational centre by asking school management teams to submit their technical and infrastructure requirements, enabling us to plan and facilitate the works that will be financed through these funds."

As announced last week, the City Council has requested that school management teams identify any preliminary works required for the proper installation and operation of the HVAC systems. These may include increasing contracted electrical capacity, upgrading or adapting electrical installations, carrying out complementary building works, or any other technical intervention necessary to ensure the successful implementation of the projects. The aim is "to understand the specific needs of each educational centre and coordinate any works that the City Council must undertake to move these HVAC plans forward."

Toni Pérez added that "while these requirements are still being finalised, the City Council welcomes the speed with which the Generalitat has processed and transferred these funds to the schools. This funding will allow the first and most urgent HVAC measures to be implemented, including the purchase and installation of portable air conditioning units, ensuring that both students and teachers can carry out their daily activities in the best possible conditions."
