The material recovered during the consolidation of this BIC in 2017 and 2018 will be exhibited, and it has been studied, analyzed and cataloged by the MARQ

The exhibition is opened to the public on Friday afternoon and is complemented by the exhibition 'Stone Guardians. The castles of Alicante', which also comes from  Alicante Provincial Council

Staff from the Department of Historical Heritage of Benidorm City Council finalize these days at Museu Bocal del Calvari the preparations for the exhibition 'Guardianes del mar. La Torre de les Caletes', an exhibition that comes from the Provincial Council of Alicante and the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) and that is centered on this 16th-century watchtower located in Punta del Cavall and cataloged as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

The councilor for the department, Ana Pellicer, explained that "the great attraction of this exhibition, in addition to learning about the entire historical context and the role that the Torre de les Caletes played over several centuries, is being able to see the material and objects that the archaeologists found and recovered during the years 2017 and 2018 and that are in the custody of the MARQ”.

Therefore, "with the temporary return to Benidorm of this material, we complete the story that we began in 2017 when, at the request of the City Council, the Provincial Coastal Service executed the consolidation project of the cliff on which the tower stands and proceeded to its restoration, thus ensuring its survival over time.

Pellicer recalled that "all the material found was treated, analyzed and cataloged by the MARQ and allowed archaeologists to know how the lookouts who inhabited our Torre de les Caletes lived, from the clothing they wore, the weapons they used and even their diet ”.

Thus, among the material exhibited in 'Guardianes del Mar. La Torre de les Caletes' there are textile elements -among them, some espadrilles-, remains of the crockery used to store water, fragments of vines used to light the bonfires that allowed the alert voice in case of pirate raids on the coast, or lead bullets from defense muskets.

The Councilor for Historical Heritage has pointed out that "the MARQ has taken care of even the smallest detail of the exhibition, which has an exclusive, very visual design, which favors the interaction of the viewer and in which all aspects related to disclosure”.

After thanking that "the Provincial Council has attended to the City Council's proposal to make an exhibition on our Torre de les Caletes that brings the reality of this BIC even closer to the population of Benidorm", Pellicer has reported that 'Guardines del Mar' "does not arrive alone, but it does so together with the exhibition 'Guardianes de piedra. The castles of Alicante', in which a tour of the main fortifications of the province is made.

Also in this second exhibition, "it is present, through our emblematic Castell, which was part of the defensive line of the coast".

'Guardianes del mar. La Torre de les Caletes' is opened to the public this Friday, March 10, at 7:00 p.m.
