The research and results of two groups of students of 2nd and 3rd year of ESO on popular myths are recognized among 226 teams from all over the country

El IES Bernat de Sarrià, premiado en un concurso de la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología

Two teams of 2nd and 3rd year ESO students from IES Bernat de Sarrià have been awarded in 'Hunters of Myths' contest organized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), in which 226 have participated teams from all over Spain.
Guided by professors Enrique Megía (Physics and Chemistry) and Laura García-España (Biology and Geology), the IES Bernat de Sarrià teams, made up of 15 students, have put different popular myths to the test, using experimentation and following the steps of the scientific method.
The research and results of the students of the school center have been recognized in the categories ‘5-second rule’ and ‘Take the juice quickly, the vitamins are gone’. Specifically, the teams were challenged to unravel the questions: "Do you drink the juice quickly to take advantage of its vitamins?" and "If you drop your toast, do you rescue it before five seconds have passed? ...". To answer both questions, they worked as a team and used two key tools: critical thinking and the scientific method.
The results obtained were presented using a scientific poster with QR codes, which, when scanned, lead to videos where the 2nd and 3rd year ESO scientists themselves explain how they carried out the research.
The Councilor for Education, Maite Moreno, has conveyed her "congratulations" for both awards to the team of students and teachers of IES Bernat de Sarrià "for the excellent results obtained in this call raised at the national level to involve students in the generation process of scientific knowledge ”and that“ also promotes group and collaborative work ”.
The winners will participate in an online workshop offered by the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT) and will receive a batch of educational resources produced by the Education Unit of FECYT. In addition, if the health situation allows it, the groups will travel to Madrid to present their results in a mini-congress.
