Benidorm reiterates its NO to sexist violence with a minute of silence for the murdered woman in Madrid

08 June 2021
Benidorm reitera el NO a la violencia machista con un minuto de silencio por la mujer asesinada en Madrid

Benidorm City Council has observed a minute of silence this afternoon in memory of the latest victim of gender violence in Spain. The First Deputy Mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Angela Zaragozí, have led the silent protest in which members of the political groups with representation in the corporation and public workers have participated.

On this occasion, the memory of the 59-year-old British woman from the town of Pozuelo de Alarcón in Madrid, who was allegedly murdered yesterday by her partner, 66, who also took her own life, has been honored.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence, after confirming the alleged crime, recalled that, with this, there are now 17 women killed by gender violence in our country in 2021; the 1,095 victim of the statesman that has been counted since 2003 and the ninth since the state of alarm was lifted on May 9 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, it should be noted that a possible sexist crime is still being investigated, although unconfirmed, that of a 21-year-old girl in Ibiza that occurred on the 3rd of this month.

The Department of Equality reiterates that the Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in caring for victims of gender violence and recalls the advisability, in the event of the slightest suspicion, of using the telephone against Gender Violence, 016, which attends 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in 52 languages. A number that, although it does not leave a trace on the phone bill, should be deleted from the phone's call log.
