Benidorm City Council has managed to reduce electricity costs by almost 52% since 2011 thanks to the implementation of lighting with 'LED' technology and energy-saving policies implemented in recent years. This saving has been constant for ten years and has also resulted in a significant reduction in kilowatt-hours consumed.

The savings in the electricity bill has gone from 3,001,663 euros that were paid in 2011 to 1,450,014 euros that have been paid for the same concept in 2021. In addition, from 2012 to 2021 the consumption of kilowatt-hours has passed from 12,774,978 to 10,489,018 "as a result of the constant actions to improve energy efficiency and the management carried out in terms of optimization of energy contracting", according to the mayor Toni Pérez.

Pérez has underlined "the work of municipal technicians" and the fact of having joined the Provincial Contracting Center "which led to a price reduction between 8% and 16% depending on the type of rate and the period.

The data also indicates that the accumulated savings in 2021 compared to the previous year stood at 169,393 euros and that the unexecuted remainder of the 2021 budget amounts to 304,257 euros. That amount, as in previous years, "will be reinvested in actions that continue to increase energy efficiency and that savings can continue to grow."

The good management in terms of energy-saving and efficiency improvement allowed the City Council to access an IDAE subsidy of more than three million euros of European funds "to improve the energy efficiency of more than 50% of the city's public lighting, which also reduces consumption and CO2 emissions” Pérez pointed out.

Precisely in this project, the City Council allocates another three million for 7,808 luminaires and 132 control centres that will allow an estimated saving of 700,000 euros. The unexecuted remainder of 2021 will be allocated to a part of the contribution that the consistory must make in the IDAE program, which is 50%.
