Benidorm tests street lamps on Montecarlo Avenue featuring an anti-corrosion treatment to protect against dog urine
The resurfacing of the road and the renewal of the pavement along the entire right-hand side of the avenue have now been completed, with tree planting set to begin in the coming weeks
Benidorm City Council is to test a new type of streetlight on Montecarlo Avenue featuring an anti-corrosion treatment designed to protect against dog urine. The announcement was made today by Councillor for the Water Cycle José Ramón González de Zárate, following an inspection with Mayor Toni Pérez of progress on the avenue’s renovation works, where the first streetlights of this type have already been installed.
According to the councillor, the new streetlights on Montecarlo Avenue are “the first in the city to feature this treatment”. It consists of applying a protective coating to the 1.2-metre section closest to the base of each streetlight. The special coating allows urine to run off rather than remain on the surface, “thereby extending the streetlights’ service life”.
González de Zárate explained that, depending on the treatment’s performance and results, the Council would gradually introduce it across the rest of the city as street furniture is renewed.
The councillor also announced that installation of the remaining street furniture, including benches and litter bins, would begin in the coming weeks. Tree planting along the right-hand pavement of the avenue, closest to Ametlla del Mar Avenue, is scheduled to start before the town’s main patron saint festivities. This pavement is now almost completely paved and is expected to reopen to pedestrians next week.
Regarding the progress of the works, González de Zárate confirmed that work is already underway on the left-hand pavement and that only two junctions remain to be completed.
At one of these, the junction with Vienna Street, the works will extend approximately 30 metres along the street to address pedestrian accessibility and safety issues. The improvements will include installing a railing and replacing the pavement along that section.
Project Details
The renovation works on Montecarlo Avenue cover approximately 500 linear metres. The current works follow on from the section between Paris and Rome Streets, which was completed more than a year ago.
The project was awarded a contract worth €1,355,814.06 and is being funded entirely through the Municipal Water Service’s Renewal Fund. It includes the replacement of all hydraulic infrastructure, which has been in service for four decades, as well as the renovation of pavements, street lighting and all street furniture.
This comprehensive redevelopment will significantly reduce problems caused by flooding and water accumulation during periods of heavy rainfall. The new stormwater drainage network will substantially increase water collection capacity along Montecarlo Avenue, preventing runoff from reaching neighbouring streets and Ametlla del Mar Avenue.
In addition, the project includes the installation of a reclaimed water network to irrigate street trees and allow residential communities to use this alternative water source for watering their gardens and green spaces.
