Benidorm City Council to allocate €8,000 in aid for victims of devastating floods in Nepal

Benidorm City Council will allocate €8,000 in emergency aid to support the victims of the devastating floods that struck northern Nepal on Wednesday, August 26, following the overflowing and sudden surge of the Bhote Koshi River.

The disaster has severely affected the Rasuwa district and communities along the river, in the area bordering Tibet. According to the latest provisional official figures, at least 470 people have died.

Mayor Toni Pérez will put forward a motion at next Monday’s full Council meeting, on behalf of the Council’s Spokespersons’ Board, to formally establish aid for those affected by the tragedy.

The City Council will also express its institutional solidarity and support to the Nepalese Government, the Embassy of Nepal in Madrid and the Nepalese community living in Benidorm in response to the devastating situation caused by the floods. The city will also join any tribute initiatives that may be organised by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).

Mayor Toni Pérez expressed his “deep sadness” this morning at the “catastrophe” and conveyed “the solidarity of the people of Benidorm with the Nepalese community at this tragic and painful time”.

He also stressed Benidorm’s “willingness to help, within our means, in responding to this emergency”, recalling that “Benidorm has always demonstrated its commitment to international solidarity and to communities facing situations of extreme hardship, such as the one we are witnessing today”.

The €8,000 contribution from Benidorm City Council will be channelled through international cooperation and humanitarian aid mechanisms established by the FEMP, the Valencian Government, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), or other humanitarian aid organisations that can demonstrate their work in the affected areas.
