The Local Government Board has approved the accessibility improvement works that include the installation of an elevator and the comprehensive renovation of the sidewalks of Tordo and Gorrión streets

Benidorm approves the renovation of the urban scene between Maravall and Jaime I

01 August 2023
Benidorm aprueba la renovación del espacio público entre Maravall y Jaime I

This action, included in the DUSI Strategy of Benidorm, has an investment that exceeds 500,000 euros co-financed by the City Council and FEDER funds

The Local Government Board of Benidorm City Council has approved the second phase of the works to improve accessibility and mobility in southern Jaime I. This action, framed within the Sustainable and Integrative Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) of Benidorm, will renovate the streets that connect Avenida Jaime I and Calle Maravall to ensure accessibility on an equal footing for all residents.

"In this recently launched legislature, we are going to continue promoting the well-being of the residents of Benidorm, accessibility, and security in each neighborhood," explained the mayor Toni Pérez. "This is how we continue to make Benidorm the best city, not only to come but to live."

The works include new non-slip pavement sidewalks, with a single platform on Tordo Street, and the transformation of Gorrión Street into a pedestrian-only square. "With the EDUSI, we have renovated the residential neighborhoods of our city, transforming them and improving the comfort of the people of Benidorm," said the mayor Toni Pérez. "With these works, which we will start soon, we continue to make progress in the recovery of public spaces so that they are friendlier and more accessible to all."

Another novelty of this improvement action is the installation of an elevator that will connect Marqués de Comillas Street with Tordo Street, which "will resolve accessibility and prevent the current slope from continuing to cause inconvenience to pedestrian traffic."

The action, which continues the urban transformation in the southern area of Jaime I, will affect Tordo, Gorrión, and Jilguero streets. Gorrión Street will be regenerated into a new pedestrian-only square with non-slip pavement and large-calibre trees will be planted. To facilitate the comfort of the residents, accessible ramps will be created for access to the homes, maintaining the current access to the garages on this street. The works will also install accessible street furniture, which will give a new life to this public space.

In Tordo Street, a single platform with non-slip pavement will be installed that will eliminate the current unevenness and stairs. Thanks to this action by EDUSI, accessibility will be ensured in this area of Benidorm.

In addition, in this area, public lighting has already been renewed with the installation of a new, more efficient LED system thanks to a grant from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). To continue promoting the improvement of the quality of life of the residents, the water network will also be renewed. The works include the improvement of the sewage network collectors, which will allow a more functional and up-to-date drainage network. New wells and scuppers will also be installed to expand the rainwater network.
"With this action that we have approved today, we continue to build a city without barriers, so that all our neighbors can enjoy public spaces under the same conditions," declared the mayor Toni Pérez.

The investment in the action to improve accessibility and mobility in the south of Jaime I amounts to 585,700.96 euros. Co-financed by Benidorm City Council and the European FEDER funds, these works respond to two strategic objectives of the EDUSI: the improvement of mobility and the recovery and enhancement of public spaces.
