The regatta, in which 200 teams are expected to participate, opens the season of the I National League and is a qualifier for the European Championship

The waters of the bay of Benidorm host the start of the SUMA Regional Sea Rowing Championship this Saturday

05 June 2024
Las aguas de la bahía de Benidorm acogen este sábado el inicio del Campeonato Autonómico SUMA de Remo de Mar

This coming Saturday the waters of the bay of Benidorm will host the start of the SUMA Autonomous Sea Rowing Championship starting at nine in the morning, organized by the Rowing Federation of the Valencian Community, the Benidorm Nautical Club, the Spanish Federation, Iberdrola and in which Benidorm City Council also collaborates.

The test, which was presented this morning at a press conference, will proclaim the regional champions of the modality and will also open the season of the I National League, a competition that will be made up of six regattas. At the same time, Saturday's regatta will be a qualifier for the European Sea Rowing Championships.

As indicated this morning by the Councilor for Sports, Javier Jordá, the participation of 160 teams from throughout the Community and another 40 from Catalonia, Galicia, Andalusia, Murcia and Algeciras are expected. There will be different categories; from cadets and youth to absolute and veteran men and women, and the competition of mixed crews is also planned in the absolute and veteran categories.

As for the boat competition, this will be divided into: 'skiff', in which only one crew member takes part; the double boats with two crew members, and the 4 sea boats, composed of four crew members and a helmsman. In the case of Benidorm Nautical Club, it will participate with two double teams and a 4 de Mar.

The day, which will welcome a large number of fans, "is expected to be sunny and with winds from the southwest of about eight knots of intensity, so it could be a difficult test due to the state of the sea, which will also add complexity to the starts. ” stated Jaume Mas, delegate of the rowing section of the Nautical Club.

The regattas can be followed from Poniente beach and the first tests will begin at nine in the morning. “The completion is scheduled around 6 p.m., so the departures will take place every 20 minutes and there will be a total of 26,” Mas detailed, pointing out that the regatta field “will be entertaining and daring in which skill will prevail. above strength.” There will be two circuits with ten beacons; one will have a 3,000-meter route for cadets, veterans and mixed veterans, and another of 4,000 meters for juniors, seniors and mixed seniors.

Javier Jordá has encouraged all fans to go to the Nautical Club on Saturday “so that they can appreciate the beauty of this hard and exciting sport that is rowing” and hopes that “it will be a healthy competition despite the wind".

Finally, the president of the Nautical Club, Jaime Samper, also wanted to “invite” neighbours and visitors to follow the regattas throughout the day, convinced that “they will have a good time following the development of the races and encouraging the participants.” ”.
