Glass recovery in the first months of 2022 almost triples compared to the previous year

Recycling levels in Benidorm are close to pre-pandemic numbers

18 May 2022
Medio Ambiente. Reciclaje.

The increase in the recycling of packaging, paper and batteries ranges between 27 and 120%

The levels of waste recycling in Benidorm during the first months of the year are close to the numbers before the pandemic, which "shows a reactivation of tourist activity, and also that citizens and the productive fabric maintain their commitment to sustainability. and with recovery and reuse”, according to the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez.

Gómez has specified that "although the volumes in which we were in 2019 have not yet been reached, which was a magnificent year in terms of tourism, the data confirm that the recovery is evident and lead us to think that it is very likely that the trend of the first months of the year is consolidated during the coming months and that we close 2022 with numbers similar to those we had before the health crisis.

According to the data provided by the mayor, "in the first four months of the year, the volume of glass recycling has almost tripled compared to 2021, going from 288,630 kilos recovered to 832,340". Gómez recalled that "for more than a decade, Benidorm has always been among the municipalities in Spain with the highest volume of glass recycling per inhabitant, far exceeding the national average".

The same tonic is also given "in the rest of waste". Thus, the recycling of packaging has grown "more than 27% in the first months of the year", reaching 220,400 kilos recovered"; while "323,380 kilos of paper and cardboard" have been collected, which translates into an increase of 45%. Greater has been the increase in the percentages of the batteries in the collection of the batteries that are deposited in the 'muppis', which is somewhat above 120%.

Gómez explained that "the role of citizens and businesses is key to achieving these values of recovery and reuse of waste, as is facilitating recycling as much as possible and that is why from the City Council, hand in hand with the entities involved, an important effort is made to offer the greatest possible number of containers in the entire municipal area”.

In addition to recycling "glass, paper, packaging and batteries, which are usually the most common waste, the City Council also favours the recycling of other waste such as furniture, electrical appliances, rubble, pruning remains, car batteries, X-rays or fluorescent tubes in the Ecopark, open every day of the week”. All waste is deposited in these facilities in an orderly manner to be recycled later.

The mayor has stressed that "within the strategy of bringing recycling closer to citizens, Benidorm has a mobile Ecopark service, which every day, from Monday to Friday, visits a neighbourhood of the city so that citizens can deposit practically at the door of your home used cooking oil and automotive oil, button and electric batteries, x-rays, small electronic devices or small toxic containers.
