This morning, chaired by the mayor Toni Pérez, the Beach Management Body of the Benidorm City Council met to review the environmental aspects of the city's beaches and the environmental and hygienic-sanitary risks that may affect them, as well as compliance of the Program of Objectives of the Integrated Management System 2020 and the revision of this program, updated for the current year.
In compliance with the requirements of the Royal Decree that regulates the National System of Response to Marine Pollution from the Beaches and Environment councils, it has been reported that it is working with the Institute of Coastal Ecology to have a Local Plan for the protection of the shoreline of the sea against pollution as required.
This plan will address affections to the marine environment from land and sea, such as spills and affections of the anchorages of vessels.
Also noteworthy in this work session, the control of environmental analytics that are developed on the beaches and the application of Covid protocols to maintain the premise of Safe Beaches, for everyone and every day, as well as the Contingency Plan that already It was active last summer and it was established with the certification of the 'Safe Tourism Certified' seal, whose flag has joined those that fly on the beaches of Benidorm: Azul, Q de Calidad and Qualitur. The objective, concluded Councilor Mónica Gómez, "is considered fulfilled," making the seal an ISO standard.
In the session, questions about hygienic-sanitary aspects of possible incidence on our beaches have been discussed and their environmental aspects have been reviewed with quality indicators in the provision of services.
Likewise, the Program of Objectives of the Integrated Management System has been analyzed, which implied compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, where the degree of compliance and involvement in its actions has been exceeded.
Mayor Toni Pérez pointed out in SDG 13, Climate Action, “a 5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction in the carbon footprint that in the summer of 2020 was more than 50% "Although it is explained by the inactivity on the beaches between mid-March and mid-June," management with the Benidorm Beach Safety system enabled more than 2.5 million users in just over a hundred days, operating at full capacity this year the beaches and their services ”.
The pandemic, Pérez said, has had an impact on the provision of some traditional services on Benidorm's beaches. Regarding SDG 10, Reduction of inequalities, “Benidorm's beaches have maintained the system of amphibious chairs and crutches, although due to the application of the Covid protocols it has not been possible to provide the assisted swimming service ”.
Soon, Benidorm will have a Municipal Action Plan against Climate Change in line with the other municipal sustainability plans as a whole, a vector towards which the city is focusing its actions for the future. Finally, Mayor Toni Pérez has highlighted, in environmental sustainability measures, which also benefit the beaches, “the reduction of the maximum speed of traffic on the access roads to the beaches and, in general, on the streets of the municipality".
