The City Council thus contributes to the creation of biodiversity and the reduction of the carbon footprint

Benidorm expands the city's trees with the planting of 1,200 new specimens of 13 species in the last two years

Benidorm City Council has increased the number of trees in the city by 1,200 specimens in the last two years, which has contributed to creating greater biodiversity in the local green fabric and has favored the absorption of carbon dioxide. The plantations have been carried out in all areas of the town, although among these specimens the pines planted in the El Moralet park or the grasses in more than 10,000 square meters of slopes in the West are not counted.

"It is a magnificent opportunity to offset the carbon footprint since the trees become true carbon sinks in the big city," explained José Ramón González de Zárate, Councilor for Public Space.

In total, 13 different species of trees have been planted, although the most numerous have been the 416 specimens of Tipuana (Tipuana tipu), the 217 Cinnamon (Melia azedarach), the 206 Mulberry (Morus alba) or the 165 Palm. robust washingtonia. Other varieties that have been planted are prawns (Ligustrum japonica), jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia), date palms (Phoenix dactilifera), washingtonias, yuccas, Bismarck palms, Aleppo pines, cycas (Cicas revolutas) and a lantern tree ( Koelreuteria paniculata fastigiata).

"All these plantations create biodiversity in the green fabric of the city of Benidorm, favoring the absorption of CO2" indicated González de Zárate, who added that "it must be taken into account that each tree is capable of absorbing about 25 kilos of dioxide of carbon per year, an amount that increases as the specimens grow.

The councilor explained that the plantations have been carried out both in the urban area and in the city parks, "so in addition to the environmental benefit, by resulting in cleanliness and air quality, these plantations also contribute to generating urban spaces more kind".

According to the head of Urban Scene, "with these actions, we are advancing in the compensation strategy for our carbon footprint." In addition, he stressed that "these actions once again express our commitment and main commitment, which is the reduction of CO2 emissions, something in which the City Council has been working for years with different measures such as the renewal of lighting with 'led' technology, the commitment to hybrid vehicles in the municipal fleet, streets for pedestrians, the creation of dissuasive parking spaces or the promotion of the use of public transport”.
