The mayor thanks the schoolchildren for their ideas and proposals to make Benidorm "an even better city"

Benidorm City Council and the Marina Baixa Family and Community Association (FAMPA) presented the awards this Wednesday for the "Mayor for a Day" competition, organised by the city's parent associations in collaboration with the Department of Education. This year, ten preschool and primary schools and two secondary schools participated in the competition. The Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the Councillor for Education, Maite Moreno, joined the students, families, and school representatives at the awards ceremony. The Mayor thanked the city's children for all their proposals and pledged to study them and implement any that are feasible.

Ten children have won awards in this second edition of the "Mayor for a Day" competition for the quality of their essays, videos, drawings, and models submitted to convey their concerns, ideas, and proposals for improving the city.

“It's no coincidence that we're here, in this room, because the FAMPA and the City Council wanted to show the students and their families the space where the municipal plenary meets and where the most important decisions in our city are made,” explained Pastori Personat, a representative of the FAMPA.

The mayor also highlighted the importance of the association movement of the AMPAs of all schools in the city and thanked the president of the FAMPA, Viviana Ankonetani, the members of the board, and the rest of the parents “who are part of it and who work voluntarily to improve the system and offer opportunities” to the school population and their families.

Toni Pérez also reminded the schoolchildren that this year the city commemorates its 700th anniversary and that, coinciding with this celebration, "the names of all the mayors of Benidorm from 1697 to the present have been recovered," after which he indicated that "perhaps today, in this plenary hall, we will have the boy or girl who in twenty or thirty years will also have the honor of being mayor of our city."

Regarding the projects presented, some of the most repeated proposals related to reducing the use of vehicles for urban travel and prioritising bicycles and pedestrians; promoting recycling; creating new recreational, sports, and reading areas, especially for children; increasing cleanliness; and planting more trees.

By grade, from first to sixth grade, the prizes went to the projects presented by Jaia González, from CEIP La Cala; Marcos Rebelles, from CEIP Miguel Hernández; Vladyslava Hernan, from Miguel Hernández Primary School; Shuqin Chen, from Miguel Hernández Primary School; Mario Martínez, from Vasco Núñez de Balboa Primary School; Waris Amir, from Els Tolls Primary School; Raquel Castro, from Serra d’Aitana Primary School; and Araceli Jiménez, from Vasco Núñez de Balboa Primary School.

In Secondary School, the awards went to Annya Admed and Sara Akronb, both in their first year of compulsory secondary education at Beatriu Fajardo Secondary School in Mendoza.
