The experimental building, which will include photovoltaic panels on the façade, will serve as a research source for an energy model based on renewables

The government will present the PRI in the next plenary session to build an innovative self-sufficient wind building in Poniente

The local government will present to the plenary session at the end of the month the Interior Reform Plan (PRI) that will make possible the construction in the Poniente area of an innovative wind building that will also incorporate other renewable energies to make it self-sufficient. This is how the mayor, Toni Pérez, has advanced today and has stressed that "with this experimental tower for the use of renewable energy, Benidorm reaches a new milestone and consolidates itself as a benchmark and spearhead in terms of environmental sustainability."

The plot on which this tower will be built is located on the new Guatemala avenue, within the 2/1 West sector, and its construction will be carried out by TM Grupo Inmobiliario, the sector's developer agent.

Toni Pérez explained that "this PRI establishes the compensation that TM will make to the City Council for the increase in the buildable area."

As on other occasions, this compensation will be made in land and money. On the one hand, the City Council is going to obtain 1,050 square meters for use as sidewalks around the plot, as well as Racó de l'Infern quarry that the developer is going to regenerate and later deliver to Benidorm for public use. Likewise, the company will complete the compensation by paying the City Council 1,502,490.99 euros, which will go to municipal land assets.

The mayor has remarked that "by obtaining the regenerated quarry, Benidorm gains in green spaces and thereby fulfills an environmental objective, to which is added another: to advance in the research and study of sustainable energy models."

Thus, as detailed by the mayor, the tower will form part of an R+D+I project by TM Grupo and the University of Alicante with which "greater and better knowledge of high-altitude wind energy" will be obtained.

This project has already "begun to work" with the installation of two anemometers. The first is located at ground level and has been taking measurements for a year and a half. The second, at a height of 100 meters, makes it possible to compare in real time the increase in wind speed and energy available at the top of the building.

To further amplify the speed of the wind and convert it into energy, the building will have an aerodynamic design and two types of turbines. From there, sufficient energy will be obtained for the operation of the building.

On the other hand, and to complement this wind energy, the building will have a horizontal photovoltaic plant on the roof and vertical solar panels on one of its facades.

With the turbines, plates, and storage systems planned in the building, the urban fabric of Benidorm will house a building that will not only have almost zero energy consumption but will even have a positive energy balance.

"We are talking -the mayor concluded- about an important investment, innovation in construction, and the capacity of Benidorm to attract projects of this magnitude that reduce the human footprint in the territory".
