More than 1,100 students will attend the talks and activities offered by environmental educators
Consorci Mare carries out 64 actions in schools and institutes in Benidorm to raise awareness about waste separation
The Consorci Mare de Residuos, the entity that manages waste for the 52 municipalities of the Marina Alta, Baixa, and El Campello regions, is carrying out a series of environmental initiatives in Benidorm's schools and institutes. The aim is to educate and raise awareness among students about recycling. A total of 64 initiatives will reach 1,112 students in ten different schools.
These initiatives began at the Vasco Núñez de Balboa school with students in the 5th and 6th grades. To mark the occasion, the Councillor for Education, Maite Moreno, and the President of the Consortium, José Ramón González de Zárate, visited the school to share their perspectives with the students. The Valencian Regional Government fully funds these activities, investing nearly €200,000.
Environmental educators from the Consortium explained to each group of students which containers to use for their household waste and answered any questions they had. Following the theoretical portion, they also prepared a series of games to reinforce the knowledge acquired.
González de Zárate highlighted the work of the organisation, which “is reaching every corner of the Consortium’s 52 municipalities and all the schools and institutes that want to participate.” In addition to schools, these initiatives are also being carried out at the city’s mobile recycling centres, the permanent recycling centre near Terra Mítica, and “through school visits to the El Campello waste treatment plant, which are essentially extracurricular activities.” Once these awareness campaigns are complete, González de Zárate estimates that they will have reached over 20,000 people across the 52 municipalities.
Naturalisation of schools
Meanwhile, Benidorm continues to make progress on its school greening project, an initiative funded by the Biodiversity Foundation. So far, three projects have been completed or are underway at Leonor Canalejas, Gabriel Miró, and Miguel Hernández schools, with completion expected this week or next. Another project will be carried out at a different school in December, and there is a possibility of additional projects before the end of the year, this time in public spaces.
