Equality recalls the 016 telephone service for victims available in 52 languages

Benidorm condemns the last murder by sexist violence registered in Pontevedra

06 June 2023
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

Benidorm City Council has condemned today the latest murder due to gender violence that occurred last weekend in the town of Oia in Pontevedra. With a silent rally at Plaza de Sus Majestades Reyes de España led by the mayor, Toni Pérez, and by the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, the Municipal Corporation, and neighbors have shown their rejection of this new crime and remembered the victim.

This is a 44-year-old woman, who was shot to death by her ex-partner at the exit of the campsite where she worked. Later, the man took his own life with the same weapon that he had used to kill the woman. As confirmed by the authorities, a restraining order weighed on the man and the Police had had to intervene up to 56 times since last April to prevent him from approaching the victim.

With this, there are already 21 women murdered in Spain so far this year by their partners or ex-partners and 1,205 since 2003, when the victims of gender violence began to be counted.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the mobile phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
