The action will double the capacity of the cemetery, which goes from the current 41,780 square meters to more than 91,000

Benidorm advances with the expansion works of the Sant Jaume cemetery and is about to start the construction of 96 niches

The expansion works of Sant Jaume cemetery are advancing and according to the established deadlines, as the acting mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, who has been accompanied by the Councilor for Cemeteries, has been able to verify 'in situ' this morning.

In addition to visiting the expansion works of the cemetery, the mayor also verified that the construction of a new islet with a capacity for 96 niches inside the current cemetery is about to begin, once the construction of two islets of 48 and 96 units respectively.

On the outside, corresponding to the expansion area, work continues according to forecasts and asphalting tasks are currently being carried out on the main roads of the urbanization so that they are finished before the end of June. All this new plot, municipally owned, will allow the current 41,780 square meters to go from 91,248 once the expansion is finished, which also includes land to locate a funeral home.

Toni Pérez pointed out that "with this work, the burial capacity for the coming decades is ensured in a land that more than doubles the surface of the cemetery and that will be equipped with all the services and infrastructures necessary in a modern cemetery".

The mayor recalled that the creation of a large car park for more than 600 vehicles has already been completed, which began to be operational on the occasion of All Saints' Day, and has stressed that there will also be space "for all types of burial".

The expansion area will also have lighting green areas and trees with species such as cypresses and tipuanas. "We are providing the cemetery with much more capacity to continue the journey that we began a few years ago, sizing the cemetery for at least three decades, so we have acted with an important vision of the future," Pérez insisted. The intervention involved an initial investment of 3.1 million euros, which is carried out on a multiannual basis.

On the other hand, regarding the cemetery, the Local Government Board of the Benidorm City Council has approved a modification in the urbanization project of its expansion to adapt it to the requirements of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda. Some changes that affect the wastewater delivery network and the electrical network channeling, are necessary for the Ministry to authorize the passage of these facilities "below the current variant of Benidorm and the planned area of passage of the future variant of Altea”, as stated in the modification of the project itself.

The modifications have meant that the budget of the Urbanization Project of the Special Plan for the Expansion of Sant Jaume Cemetery is increased by 307,383.06 euros (9.75%) and is finally set at 3,460,030.11 euros. The lead time is also extended by 16 weeks.

The approval of this modification entails other minor modifications such as the change in road grades initially planned, the redesign of channeled rainwater networks, the modification of the wastewater sewerage network, the modification in the type of pavements and their design in the interior pedestrian sidewalks of the cemetery or the annulment of the existing cast iron pipe.
