This reforestation is included among the climatic emergency actions promoted by the center within the Xarxa 2030 initiative

Students of the IES Beatriu Fajardo de Mendoza plant 150 bushes and trees in the surroundings of the Séquia Mare

Students of the IES Beatriu Fajardo de Mendoza have carried out a reforestation action throughout the morning in the surroundings of the Séquia Mare park, in which the Department of the Environment has actively collaborated. In total, about 160 students have participated in this activity, and have been in charge of planting 150 tree and shrub specimens of a dozen different native species in the pine forest adjoining the park. During the process, they have had the help and assistance of the City Council's rural guard, and from the Department, the students have been provided with the necessary tools and managed the collection and transport of the specimens of baladre, rosemary, ephedra, salsola, rhamnus, Kermes oak , anthyllis, esparto grass, willow, stone pine and Cartagena cypress.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, have come to Séquia Mare to find out the scope of this action promoted by the educational centre within the Xarxa 2030 initiative, with which they have already measured the footprint of carbon from their classrooms. Precisely, the plantation made today serves to offset that carbon footprint and is part of axis 1 of the Climate Emergency of the Xarxa 2030, that of Sustainability, climate change, loss of biodiversity, responsible consumption and healthy living

In addition, the activity also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the educational centre, which the IES is celebrating throughout the course.

The mayor highlighted "the suitability" of actions like this, which "bring the younger population closer to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thus raising awareness of the paramount importance of their implementation and compliance to face the future in better conditions and with a better quality of life from an environmental, social and economic point of view”. Toni Pérez recalled that "Benidorm City Council is very involved in compliance with the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda, deploying actions and strategies in tune with them".

Apart from "its environmental importance and commitment to the SDGs", the mayor has influenced "the symbolism" of the activities carried out today, since "the students of the IES Beatriu Fajardo de Mendoza have carried out this reforestation precisely in the vicinity of the Séquia Mare that was ordered to be built by the woman who gives the educational centre its name, the Lady of Benidorm, architect of the repopulation of our city in 1666”. "This Reg Major de l'Alfàs encouraged the population to return to Benidorm and with initiatives such as the one developed today by the students of this IES, we ensure a better quality of life for future generations in this city", he added.
