The redevelopment and remodeling project of Avenida del Mediterráneo and its surroundings has been recognized with the 'Ciudad y Territorio Albert Serratosa' award, created by the College of Civil Engineers, Canals, and Ports and awarded annually by the Caminos Foundation. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, collected this award today, obtained in the Civil Works category, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, where he has traveled together with the Councilor for Works, José Ramón González de Zárate and the technical team of the work

The mayor pointed out that "the jury has recognized the scope, result, and excellence of this urban renewal action based on the recovery of social relations and spaces for people, and that it has meant a radical change in the appearance and configuration of one of the main arteries of Benidorm and all its surroundings”. An intervention, he recalled, that "was not limited solely to a section of more than 450 meters of Avenida del Mediterráneo, but was extended to the streets and adjacent spaces such as Plaza de la Hispanidad, Puente, Valencia and Bilbao streets and the avenue of Europe”.

Specifically, when awarding this award, the urban integration and design of the project, the environmental and social sustainability obtained, the improvement of accessibility and mobility, and the reduction of the impact of climate change, innovation, and uniqueness have been valued. , as well as the management, participation, and transversality of the action.

Toni Pérez indicated that "the renovation of Avenida del Mediterráneo has been, almost certainly, the largest urban renewal project undertaken by the City Council in the last decade"; and he has assured that "it is a pride to receive this award on behalf of Benidorm". An award that "endorses the municipal commitment so that Benidorm continues to be a benchmark for urban planning vanguard and also an example of sustainable management of both natural resources, especially water, and mobility".

It is not the first time that the 'Albert Serratosa Ciudad y Territorio' awards have been set in Benidorm since in 2019 Foietes Park was a finalist for this award.

Details of the remodeling project of Avenida del Mediterráneo

The project for Avenida del Mediterráneo and surrounding streets contemplated the renovation of all the hydraulic infrastructures in the area, key in the supply and purification network of Benidorm, and the adoption of measures to prevent rainwater from reaching the Levante beach, for which the construction of an anti-pollution tank was included.

Once the hydraulic network was solved and updated, it was decided to turn this avenue into a "living" space, in which the pedestrian was the protagonist. To this end, in addition to reducing traffic lanes from 4 to 1 and limiting speed to 10 kilometers per hour, large sidewalks were created and innovative technological solutions such as the 'techno stop' or the 'technohito' were implemented.
