Consorci Mare installs the first containers in Benidorm to manage the collection of used clothing and cooking oil

The Consortium for the Execution of the Forecasts of the Zonal Waste Plan 6, Management Area A1, known as Consorci Mare, has begun installing the first containers on the streets of Benidorm to manage the separate collection of used clothing and cooking oil, as part of a pilot project developed by this organization to optimize the management of this waste and later expand it to other member municipalities.

The president of Consorci Mare and Benidorm City Councilor, José Ramón González de Zárate, and the Environment Councilor, Mónica Gómez, emphasized that the installation of these containers is "the result of an agreement approved by the plenary session last August, which establishes that the Consortium will provide this service at no cost to Benidorm, while also being able to obtain actual usage data to plan more efficiently and in line with demand."

The installation of these new containers began this week, and currently, there are 23 clothing collection devices deployed in different areas of the city. In the coming days, their installation will be completed, bringing the total to 37, while the planned number of containers for used oil collection is eleven.

González de Zárate noted that "all the locations where these containers have been located, as expected, have been planned jointly with the City Council and the waste collection concessionaire, to establish the most suitable locations." He also stated that an information and awareness campaign will be carried out in the coming weeks by environmental educators to inform citizens how to properly dispose of this type of waste.

The president of Consorci Mare noted that textile waste reaches the landfills at 12% of the total. "Hence, it is essential to carry out information and awareness campaigns to try to reduce this percentage as much as possible." He also highlighted the importance of these campaigns regarding household cooking oil "to prevent unauthorised pouring down toilets, sinks, and other points, which cause significant damage to sanitation and treatment infrastructure and are costly to repair."
