Captain Pedro Márquez de la Calleja, commander of the flotilla, head of the base and director of the submarine school based in Cartagena, offered an interesting conference on Thursday evening within the 'Days of the Sea', under the title 'The submarine weapon today'.

This series of conferences, organized by the Frax Foundation in collaboration with the Benidorm City Council, brought together dozens of people in the Culture Classroom of the Mediterranean Foundation, demonstrating the close connection between Benidorm and the Navy and everything related to the sea. Among them, the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, who along with other members of the municipal Corporation accompanied Captain Márquez de la Calleja; the president of the Frax Foundation, Matías Pérez Such; and the naval commander of Alicante, captain Joaquín Vegara.

During his conference, the head of the submarine base reviewed the history of submarine weapons in our country and the progress made with the new S-80 class submarines that have been or will be incorporated in the coming years. The fleet makes Spain one of the countries in the world with the greatest potential in this field.

Likewise, he related some details of what life is like for submariners when they are on a mission or the projects that are underway to renovate the facilities of the submarine base and the school.

Before listening to Pedro Márquez de la Calleja, the public was also able to enjoy a video recording made in super-8 by Matías Pérez Such in November 1976, when Benidorm hosted the solemn ceremony of handing over the battle flag to the submarine Cosme García, S-34, and remember other events that have been carried out in our city in collaboration with the Navy.

Mayor Toni Pérez thanked the Frax Foundation, the Naval Museum and other people and organizations involved for organizing these days that “further reinforce the close relationship between Benidorm and the Navy.”

The next appointment with the 'Days of the Sea' will be on Thursday, May 9, and will be led by Captain José Ramón Vallespín, director of the Department of Studies and Research of the Institute of Naval History and Culture and director of the Magazine of Naval History. The conference will be titled 'The Navy of Aragón'.
