During 2025, progress has been made in fulfilling the two-year plan for the environmental and social sustainability of the beaches
Benidorm's beaches pass audits and renew all their quality certifications
Throughout 2025, Benidorm's beaches successfully passed the audits for the renewal of all their quality certifications, meaning that this year they will once again display distinctions such as the S for Sustainability and the Q for Quality awarded by the ICTE (Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality), the EMAS Regulation, and ISO 9001 and 14001. This was confirmed during today's meeting of the Beach Management Board, chaired by Mayor Toni Pérez and Councilor Mónica Gómez. Also participating in the meeting were the councillors for Water Cycle, Public Works, and Urban Planning—José Ramón González de Zárate, Francis Muñoz, and Lourdes Caselles—as well as technicians from various municipal departments.
Gómez explained that “we are talking about very demanding standards that assess the quality and environmental management of our beaches, the services provided there, the accessibility of our sand, and all the resources we offer. In short, standards that analyse every parameter and aspect of our beaches and that confirm their excellence.”
The Head of Beaches and Environment highlighted “the work and commitment of the municipal technicians and the concessionary company to ensure that the beaches and all their services are always at the highest level, acting immediately if any incident occurs or if there is anything that needs correcting.” In this regard, she pointed out that “for example, in response to the improvement guidelines identified in the audits, the access ramps to the accessible beach huts have been renovated.”
Also related to the improvement of the beaches, the Beach Sustainability Plan was discussed during the meeting. Gómez recalled that “last year we set objectives to improve the environmental and social sustainability of our beaches, and these are linked to several SDGs.” “It was a two-year plan,” she continued, “and by 2025 a significant portion of the commitments made have already been met, with actions such as the expansion of the swimming channel, the acquisition of new amphibious chairs for accessible beach areas, the installation of Navilens codes for blind people with real-time information on sea conditions, and the implementation of environmental awareness campaigns.”
By 2026, the Beach Management Authority has outlined approximately twenty actions and commitments to fully implement the Sustainability Plan.
Finally, the 2025 Activity Report has also been submitted, detailing actions, initiatives, and measures such as joining the Green Cities Pact, participating in Earth Hour, the Circular View program, and awareness talks about Posidonia seagrass. The document also includes measures implemented or promoted by the Environment Department, such as tree planting, the school garden competition, and the opening of a new phase of urban gardens along Camí de la Parva.
