The City Council is working on a Community Action Program focused on the social inclusion of this ethnic group

Benidorm will light up the Castle tonight in blue, red and green, commemorating the Roma Day

08 April 2021
Benidorm il·luminarà esta nit el Castell, de blau, roig i verd, commemorant el Dia del Poble Gitano...

Adding to the commemoration of the International Roma Day, which is celebrated on Thursday, Benidorm lights up one of its most emblematic and representative places, the Castle, with the colors of the Roma flag: blue, red and green.

This date, April 8, commemorates the First Roma / Gypsy World Congress held in London on April 8, 1971, in which the flag was instituted - blue from the sky, green from the field, and in red a large wagon wheel symbolizing the wishes for freedom of movement throughout the world- and the gypsy anthem, these symbols being established in its IV Congress.

The Councilor for Social Welfare, Angela Llorca, stressed that "Benidorm City Council supports with this initiative the egalitarian fight for the rights of Roma people, social inclusion and respect for the identity of the Roma people."

"This support goes beyond this act and becomes a reality," insisted the councilor, with specific actions in the areas of "education, employment, housing, health and equal treatment and non-discrimination, with the claim to guarantee the constitutional right and the full equality of this group ”.

One of these policies, LLorca pointed out, “is the implementation in the City Council of a community action program” that for a whole year will focus on implementing actions “towards social inclusion and the recognition of the Roma culture and the diversity of society; as well as the promotion of the participation of this group as citizens with full rights ”.

The councilor has indicated that the department of Social Work and Community Action is overturned with this initiative.

The lighting - blue, red and green - of Benidorm Castle is a commemoration of the International Roma Day and will take place from 8:00 p.m.
