Benidorm will celebrate the Chinese New Year for the first time this weekend

Benidorm will celebrate the Chinese New Year for the first time this weekend

03 March 2026
Benidorm celebrará por primera vez el Año Nuevo chino este fin de semana

The city of Benidorm will celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Fire Horse, for the first time in its history this coming weekend. This was announced this morning by the Councillor for Festivals, Mariló Cebreros, who emphasised that it is a festival "that symbolises energy, dynamism, and new beginnings, values that perfectly align with the open and entrepreneurial spirit of our city."

Also present at the presentation was Veline Ong, the organiser of the events, from the company Chino Rocket.

The program will take place, weather permitting, in the Plaza de SS MM Reyes de España (Square of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain). According to the Councilor for Festivals, the official opening will be held on Friday from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM with the inauguration of cultural and gastronomic stalls, traditional Chinese crafts, commemorative stamps, and authentic Asian cuisine.

All events are planned to be held outdoors, although if adverse weather conditions prevent this, they will be moved to an indoor venue. However, the decision will be made on Thursday.

The main day of the event will take place on Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The official parade will begin in the morning, proceeding from the Levante beach promenade to the Plaza de SS MM Reyes de España (Square of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain). This will be followed by the official opening ceremony with representatives from the Chinese embassy and invited authorities. “Throughout the day, there will be approximately six hours of cultural performances, including traditional dances, music, and visual displays,” Cebreros explained. On Sunday, the 8th, activities will continue from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, culminating in the official closing ceremony. The councilwoman stated that this celebration “is an opportunity to strengthen community spirit, cultural exchange, and Benidorm’s international profile as an open and diverse city.”

Veline Ong, for her part, expressed her gratitude for the support provided by Benidorm City Council, “as this is the first time this celebration has been held here,” and also thanked “the sponsors and collaborators who have dedicated so much time and effort to make this event possible.” Ong invited “everyone to be part of this great celebration.”

Furthermore, Veline Ong announced that a production company will be creating a promotional video for the celebration aimed at the Chinese market. “The goal is for them to get to know this city and come visit,” she said.
