Benidorm City Council has proceeded to renovate some 200 luminaires around the Parque de l'Aigüera thanks to the city's 'Public Lighting Renovation' program, financed in equal parts by the City Council itself and the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE).

This intervention, framed within Phase I of such project -corresponding to the Central Zone- has been visited today within the 'A pie de calle' campaign by the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, the councillors of Citizenship Participation and Urban Scene, Ana Pellicer and José Ramón González de Zárate, accompanied by representatives of the Neighborhood Council and residents of the neighbourhood.

Inside the park, the replacement of 40 luminaires is planned for as many of the Senda model and 60 of the Classic model, as explained by the mayor, who has also specified that in Avenida de l'Aigüera another 60 ornamental luminaires of the style model. "Furthermore, in the leisure and recreation park located in the northern area of l'Aigüera park, the current ones will also be replaced by 40 Senda-model luminaires with a staff," he indicated.

"We are talking about a total of approximately two hundred renovated luminaires in the entire surroundings of Parque de l'Aigúera" Pérez pointed out. The work, added the mayor, "is included in Phase I of the energy efficiency program that we carry out with the IDAE." In this case, several lighting manufacturers have been contracted "to diversify the supply".

In the leisure and recreation park, the replacement affects the globe lamps “which are about 20 years old and were very deteriorated. In addition, its renovation also covers the staff and the command centre, as well as the entire technical control part. They are investments that facilitate the lives of neighbours and the enjoyment of public spaces” said Toni Pérez.

In this sense, the mayor recalled that in 2010 an intervention was carried out in this area “which will now be replaced because the model that was installed was very obsolete. We also have the obligation to offer greater quality and innovation in the aesthetic part”.

Phase I of the Public Lighting Renewal program is budgeted at around two million euros, of which the idea contributes 50% and the City Council the other half. As for the total cost of the three phases of this project, it amounts to six million, financed 50% by both parties.

Toni Pérez has highlighted in today's visit "the importance of sharing with neighbours and the Neighborhood Council their opinions on these interventions and the possible improvements to be addressed by the City Council, given the need to give prominence to our parks and gardens because we want a city that is more habitable, comfortable and with a clear commitment to sustainability, like the one we are undertaking”.

The program pursues the renovation of the exterior lighting installations of the municipality on which no action had yet been carried out to improve energy efficiency. The project, designed under energy-saving and efficiency criteria, will serve to significantly reduce electricity consumption as a first step towards the 'Smart City.

In this first phase, action is being taken on 2,733 light points and 54 command centres, which means renewing 80.14% of the 3,410 light points existing in the area. This will allow the reduction of installed power from 441.2 kilowatts to 119.53 and CO2 emissions will be reduced by 723.27 tons per year.
