Benidorm expresses its rejection of the five new victims of sexist violence confirmed in our country
This Tuesday, Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence as a sign of rejection and condemnation of the last three cases of gender violence confirmed in the last hours in our country which have ended the lives of six people: three women, the two youngest children of one of them and the mother of another. The silent rally took place at the door of the City Hall and was led by the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, together with the councillor of Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, and other members of the Municipal Corporation.
All cases were recorded over the weekend. The first of them occurred on Friday in the town of Las Pedroñeras, in the province of Cuenca, where a 44-year-old man murdered his 30-year-old ex-partner and his two children from the marriage, aged 8 and 3, respectively. The victim had reported his attacker for gender violence on at least five occasions, complaints for which a restraining order had been imposed on him and for which he had a prison order. Despite this, he did not have a tracking bracelet, which allowed him to sneak into the home and end the life of his ex-wife and his two children.
After the triple murder, he was arrested and his imprisonment was ordered.
The second crime occurred in the province of Malaga on Saturday the 29th, specifically in the town of Fuengirola. There a 75-year-old man ended the life of his 76-year-old wife. The aggressor left a letter confessing his responsibility and tried to take his own life later by swallowing pills. There were no previous complaints of mistreatment. The man is detained and has already entered prison.
The last case took place on the same Saturday, in the town of Zafarraya (Granada), where a 34-year-old man killed his 20-year-old ex-partner and her 45-year-old mother, subsequently committing suicide. There were also no previous complaints of gender violence against the perpetrator of both crimes.
These three crimes bring to 19 the number of women who have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners so far this year and to 1,263 the victims of sexist violence since 2003 when the statistics began. Likewise, the number of murdered minors amounts to 9 so far in 2024 and 62 since 2013.
The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log.
