Benidorm condemns the last five murders due to sexist violence confirmed in our country

16 July 2024
Benidorm condena los cinco últimos asesinatos por violencia machista confirmados en nuestro país

This Tuesday, Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence to condemn the last five murders due to violence against women confirmed in our country, which have ended the lives of five women in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza and Tarragona. The silent rally took place at noon at the door of City Hall and was led by the acting mayor, Ana Pellicer. Along with her, the councillor of Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, and other members of the Municipal Corporation have also participated, thus expressing their unanimous rejection after one of the most tragic weekends related to sexist violence in Spain.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence and the Ministry of Equality have reported that, in the case of Zaragoza, the victim is a 48-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her ex-partner on July 6 in the store that both they ran The victim lived in the town of Ejea de los Caballeros and had two minor children. There were no previous complaints of gender violence against the alleged aggressor, who was subsequently arrested and imprisoned.

In Buñol (Valencia), the victim is a 31-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her partner on July 13, whom the woman had previously reported for gender violence but did not have any protection order. While fleeing from him, the murderer rammed into a Civil Guard vehicle, after which he was arrested and his imprisonment had already been ordered.

That same day, another 29-year-old woman was also murdered in Madrid, allegedly by her partner. The victim had a minor son from another relationship. There were no previous complaints of gender violence against the alleged aggressor, who was subsequently arrested.

Also on July 13, a 76-year-old woman was murdered in Salou (Tarragona), allegedly by a man who was her partner and who had previous complaints of gender violence. The man was arrested at the same scene of the crime.
Finally, on Sunday, July 14, another 36-year-old woman was murdered with a firearm in Alicante, also allegedly at the hands of her partner, who later took her life. In this case, there were also no previous complaints of gender violence against the alleged aggressor.

With the confirmation of these cases, the number of women murdered by gender violence in Spain has risen to 26 so far in 2024 and to 1,270 since 2003, when these data began to be collected. Likewise, the number of minors who have been orphaned due to violence against women in Spain amounts to 17 in 2024 and 450 since 2013.

A new one could be added to all these cases in the next few hours. The Ministry of Equality has reported that they continue to collect data on the alleged murder due to gender violence of a 30-year-old woman in Sabadell (Barcelona).

The Department of Equality reminds us that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log.

This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and in 52 languages.

Likewise, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If it is not possible to make a call and in a dangerous situation, you can use the ALERTCOPS application, from which an alert signal will be sent to the police with geolocation. These means of assistance can be activated by the victim and also by any person who knows or suspects a case of gender violence. It is a duty of the entire society.
