The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, attended today in Rota (Cádiz) the meeting of the Technical Committee of the Spanish Network of Smart Cities where he highlighted the "real transformation" experienced by Benidorm that has led the city to be a " reference and spearhead” in this matter.

Pérez has indicated that Benidorm is in this privileged place "for having made the transition from the beginning following a road map that allows us to have the Benidorm we have today." He stressed that "we will be the best destination to come if we are the best city to live in."

In this sense, the mayor has focused his intervention on the sustainability macro-projects 'Green and water: Rooting Benidorm in its natural environment' and on the green and sustainable transition proposal, energy efficiency, digital transition, and the competitiveness of the proposal 'Green Benidorm 2024-26. He has also mentioned the projects 'Benidorm Phygital, the Low Emission Zone and the Movele among others.

The mayor of Benidorm has referred to the "transformative effect" of these projects that have meant that "in Benidorm this transformation is real." He affirmed that from now on "we are facing very powerful challenges" and insisted that the training of personnel and their ability to integrate are "fundamental", since "due to the speed of new technologies we need technology professionals and we have from generating, recognizing, retaining to incorporating talent”. This is a new local challenge” he asserted.

To illustrate the transformation of the city, Pérez has detailed some actions underway in Benidorm such as "EDUSI, two extraordinary sustainability plans, a call from the Ministry of Transport, a plan to strengthen trade in tourist areas, and a program from the Foundation Biodiversity”. He has also stressed that in terms of water "we are a paradigm worldwide" and in tourism promotion "public-private collaboration with specific and direct campaigns allow us to reach the moment of inspiration for the trip." At this point, he has highlighted the "great work" of Visit Benidorm and the fact that if Benidorm is the headquarters of the Destinations Platform "it is because of the previous work, as Minister Maroto said in his day."

Toni Pérez valued "very positively" that Benidorm is called to all kinds of forums "to present our experiences, our journey, and our success stories". Meetings in which "the projection that a tourist intelligence system implies for destination management" is revealed. In the mayor's opinion, "We are in a sweet moment of attraction and reputation thanks to a strategic plan, in the same way, that we have been able to continuously position ourselves and reposition ourselves as a leader in tourism in Spain."

Finally, Pérez recalled once again that Benidorm was "the first certified smart tourist destination in the world" and that this network now has 615 members, of which 437 are tourist destinations, 91 companies, and 87 institutions "that have joined the DTI network in which Benidorm has played a fundamental role in its genesis and trajectory and growth to this day”.
