School workshops to commemorate the International Museum Day in Benidorm

Talleres escolares para conmemorar el Día Internacional de los Museos en Benidorm

Benidorm City Council, through its Department of Historical Heritage, has organised two educational workshops to mark International Museum Day and the recent opening of the archaeological collection at the Boca del Calvari Museum.

As explained by the Councillor for Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, the workshop aims to "complement the learning process of school students "through practical and enriching experiences, designed to foster interactive learning, the development of manual skills, and an interest in history in a fun and participatory way."

Students in the second cycle of Primary Education from various schools in Benidorm participated in the workshops. The activity began at 9:00 a.m.

One of these workshops took place on Benidorm's Poniente Beach, near the Maritime Cultural Centre. It was the "Archaeologist for a Day" workshop. An initiative that, for an hour and a half, offered students the opportunity to experience the work of a professional through a simulated excavation.

"The participants," Pellicer said, "are interested in our past as they represent the discovery of a series of finds, which they subsequently analysed through critical thinking and with the help of specialist personnel."

The next activity was the "Roman Lucezedrne" workshop, lasting one hour, which taught the students "the importance of lighting in Ancient Rome." Each participant made their clay lucern, which, Pellicer recalled, were "oil lamps with a small reservoir for oil and a spout from which a wick protruded, which was lit to produce light."

In addition to the workshops, participating students were able to take a guided tour of the Luis Durart i Alabarta Archaeology Room, located on the second floor of the Boca del Calvari. The facility houses the permanent exhibition of the Benidorm City Council's museum collection, with pieces spanning from the Neolithic to the 20th century.
