Our Father Jesus of Nazareth travels through the center of Benidorm and fulfills the tradition of Holy Wednesday
The Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth upheld the Holy Wednesday tradition tonight, processing through the heart of Benidorm in a solemn and devout procession. The procession departed at 10:00 p.m. from the parish church of Sant Jaume i Santa Anna, following its usual route through the historic centre and various streets of the city centre, where numerous residents and visitors lined the streets.
For nearly two hours, the members of the brotherhood accompanied the floats of La Convocatoria (The Convocation) and Our Father Jesus of Nazareth carrying the Cross, in one of the most representative and traditional events of Holy Week in Benidorm. The procession passed through Sant Jaume Square, Calle Mayor, Alameda, Plaza de la Cruz, Ruzafa, La Biga, Tomás Ortuño, Apolo XI, Almendros, Paseo de la Carretera, and Santa Faz, before returning to the parish church.
The procession included members of religious brotherhoods of all ages, penitents, and representatives from the various local brotherhoods and confraternities. Leading the procession were María Dolores Cano, president of the Brotherhood of Jesus of Nazareth, and José Manuel Olvera, president of the Benidorm Board of Brotherhoods and Confraternities, along with the mayor, Toni Pérez; the councillor for Fiestas, Mariló Cebreros; other members of the city council; and regional deputies José Ramón González de Zárate and Manuel Pérez Fenoll.
The Colla de Xirimiters de la Marina (a traditional Galician wind instrument group) led the parade, which featured members of religious brotherhoods of all ages, with children playing a prominent role by reenacting scenes from the Passion of Christ. Also prominent were penitents with their faces covered, dragging crosses and heavy chains, followed by the image of the Nazarene, members of the Fire Department (which was granted honorary status last year), women in traditional dress, and residents. The Societat Musical l’Illa de Benidorm brought up the rear of the procession.
Throughout the night, the scent of incense and beeswax accompanied the image of the Nazarene in an atmosphere of reverence and respect, befitting an event deeply rooted in the city's religious and cultural tradition.
The Holy Week celebrations continue today, Holy Thursday, with further liturgical services and processions throughout the city. Highlights include the joint procession of the Brotherhood of the Last Supper and the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Forgiveness and the Good Death, departing at 9:00 p.m. from the Almudena Cathedral, and the solemn procession of the Brotherhood of the Prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, also departing at 9:00 p.m. from the Parish of St. John the Baptist in La Cala.
