Minute of silence in Benidorm for the latest case of sexist violence

07 February 2023
Minuto de silencio

The Municipal Corporation of Benidorm gathered this Tuesday in front of the main door of the City Hall to observe a minute of silence in revulsion for the murder of a woman in the Pontevedra town of Baiona.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, together with the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, have quietly led the concentration with which the City Council shows, for the second time this week, its firmest rejection of gender violence.

Last Sunday, the police discovered the lifeless body of a 47-year-old woman at her home in Baiona (Pontevedra). Her corpse showed obvious signs of violence, especially on her head. The alleged murderer, and his partner, the same age, committed the crime at the time of the return of the underage children they had in common and who had spent the weekend with him.

After killing the woman, the man left the children at the grandparents' house and fled, although he was later arrested by the authorities and brought to justice.

With this, there are already eight women murdered so far in 2023 and 13 minors who have been orphaned due to gender violence in our country. The number of women murdered since 2003 amounts to 1,190.

In any situation of risk, the Department of Equality reminds that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence who can provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates that the victims have the free telephone number 016 against gender violence, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the call log. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
