The year closes with 49 women murdered, one more than in 2021, and 38 orphaned minors due to this social scourge

Minute of silence in Benidorm for the last woman victim of gender violence in 2022 in Madrid

02 January 2023
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

This noon a minute of silence has been observed at the door of Benidom City Hall, convened by the Department of Equality, in memory of the last victim of sexist violence in Spain in 2022.

With this silent concentration, presided over by the first deputy mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, the Benidorm City Council reiterates, once again, its strongest rejection of sexist violence and advocates for the eradication of this social scourge that has led, during the year just ended, the death of 49 women and 38 minors have been orphaned.

As of today, the statistics compute 1,182 fatalities due to gender violence in Spain since January 1, 2003.

The case that concerns us now is that of a 20-year-old woman who died at the hands of her partner, aged 37, in the Madrid district of Puente de Vallecas. The young woman was stabbed, around 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, at the home of a friend of the alleged perpetrator of the crime who, later, tried to commit suicide, but failed in the attempt. The criminal is currently seriously admitted to the hospital, under judicial supervision.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the mobile phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
