Minute of silence in Benidorm to condemn the sexist crime against a woman in Burgos

The number of women victims of gender violence has risen to 5 so far this year and to 1,299 since 2003
Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence this afternoon to express its condemnation of the latest murder due to gender-based violence confirmed in our country by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence. The victim is a 34-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her partner last Sunday, March 16, and whose body was found in a wooded area near the town of Salinillas de Bureba, about 40 kilometres from Burgos. She had a minor son.
The silent rally took place at the entrance to City Hall and was led by the First Deputy Mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, along with numerous members of the municipal council, who expressed their unanimous rejection of this gender-based murder.
With the confirmation of this new case, the number of women murdered due to gender-based violence in Spain in 2025 has risen to five. Since 2003—when data collection began—1,299 women have lost their lives at the hands of their partners or ex-partners. Likewise, the number of children orphaned due to gender-based violence against their mothers has risen to seven so far this year and 476 since 2013.
On another note, the Government Delegation has confirmed that law enforcement agencies are investigating the murder of another 79-year-old woman in the Balearic Islands, as there are indications that this could be a new, as yet unconfirmed case of gender-based violence.
The Department of Equality, headed by Councilor Ángela Zaragozí, reminds us that Benidorm City Council has staff specialized in gender-based violence to provide free counselling to any woman who feels threatened.
They also reiterate that victims have access to the free 016 hotline, which leaves no trace on their phone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from their cell phone call logs. This service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and in 52 languages.
Similarly, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If a call is not possible and a dangerous situation arises, you can use the ALERTCOPS app, which will send an alert signal with geolocation to the police. All of these assistance methods can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender-based violence. It is a duty of all society.
