The main events of Benidorm's Holy Week move today, Maundy Thursday, to La Almudena and San Juan Bautista
Devotion and tradition in the procession of Jesus Nazarene in Benidorm
One more year, the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno has processed on Holy Wednesday accompanied by the brothers with their faces hidden and the women with the traditional Spanish mantilla, preceded by the Colla de Xirimiters de la Marina and accompanied by the band of the Society Musical l'Illa de Benidorm.
The oldest brotherhood of Benidorm (founded in 1967) started from the Plaza de Sant Jaume and has continued through the streets Mayor, Alameda, Plaza de La Cruz, Ruzafa, La Biga, Tomás Ortuño, Apolo XI, Almendros, Paseo de la Carretera, Santa Faz and then returned to Sant Jaume. During the tour, a group of children, relatives of the members of the Brotherhood, staged typical scenes of the passion of Jesus.
The parish priest of Sant Jaume i Santa Anna, Juan Antonio González, led the entourage that followed the float. With him, the president of the Brotherhood, Mª Dolores Cano; the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez; the Councilor for Fiestas, Mariló Cebreros and a large group of councillors; the regional deputies Manuel Pérez Fenoll, José Ramón González de Zárate and Mario Villar; and the president of the Greater Board of Brotherhoods of Holy Week of Benidorm, Mª Teresa Cantó, assisted by their representatives.
Many of the brothers, following tradition, have processed barefoot and dragged heavy iron chains and wooden crosses. The respect and admiration of the public were mixed with the aroma of the candles on a humid night that, despite the 17º mercury, cooled the atmosphere as the night progressed and until the return of the image of Christ to the temple.
Today, Thursday, the processions move to the neighbourhoods of Foietes Colonia Madrid and La Cala. On the one hand, at 9:00 p.m. the Sacramental Brotherhood of the Holy Supper and the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Forgiveness and Good Death will procession. At the same time, in the parish of San Juan Bautista, the Brotherhood will do the same for the Prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
