A conference by captain Juan Escrigas begins the Sea Days in Benidorm
The conference 'The endowments of the Cervera squadron' offered yesterday afternoon by Captain Juan Escrigas Rodríguez in the Assembly Hall of the Benidorm City Council marked the beginning of the 'Sea Days 2024' in the city that is organized by Frax Foundation, the Naval Museum and the Naval Museum Foundation, with the collaboration of the local City Council.
The talk took place after the formal ceremony of the official transfer to Benidorm of the propeller of the corvette 'Hunter', which was held in Poniente. Vice Admiral Enrique Torres Piñeyro, director of the Institute of Naval History and Culture of the Navy, also participated in the conference.
The presentation brought the audience that filled the venue closer to the sailors who were part of the crew of the ships that fought in Santiago de Cuba. After an introduction by Matías Pérez Such, president of Frax Foundation, Juan Escrigas highlighted “the affection that is palpable in Benidorm towards the Navy.” He also recalled “the many memories of the corvette Cazadora” and remembered “as it could not be otherwise when being in Benidorm, Admiral Julio Guillén Tato.” All this before a conference “in which they talk about honour, loyalty and patriotism”
At the end of Escrigas's intervention, Vice Admiral Enrique Torres Piñeyro took the floor, alluding to the fact that “at the Institute we value the history of our Navy” and highlighted that in Spain “we have a very powerful weapon; our culture and our history.” Torres expressed the “excitement” of his institution in these Sea Days and advanced that “we are closing the calendar, but until the end of July we will do many things.”
The event was closed by Mayor Toni Pérez, who summarized the day that began at 6 p.m. in Poniente. “We have lived through very intense moments,” he stated before showing the purpose of these days, which is “for our people to know, even if it is a small part, the history of our Navy.” Pérez addressed all the representatives of the Navy to tell them that “you are not alone because the majority of Spaniards feel patriotic and we are proud to be so.” Lastly, he alluded to the figures of “Constable Zaragoza and Ramón Llorens” as fundamental characters to rescue the memory of many illustrious figures of the Navy.
