Commerce clarifies that, as in previous years, on Monday of Patron Saint's Major Festivities will be openable, in no case working day

01 February 2017
Comercio aclara que, como en años anteriores, el lunes de Fiestas Mayores Patronales será festivo aperturable, en ningún caso día laborable

In compliance with the regulations, the City Council has processed the request for opening on a bank holiday requested by a supermarket association

The councilman of Commerce, Ana Pellicer, has clarified this morning that, "as in previous years," on Monday of Major Patron Saint Festiities -13 November - will be "an openable bank holiday, but in no case a working day." Pellicer wanted to clear the doubts that have arisen in the last hours in social networks following the publication of a misleading news about the plenary agreement adopted last Monday with the majority vote of the corporation.

The councilwoman explained that "the only thing that the City Council has done is to request the Territorial Service of Commerce of the Generalitat that retail establishments can open that local festivity", in view of "the request made by a supermarket association " in the region. It has also deepened in that, since 1997, the autonomous legislation establishes that the municipalities must transfer to the Territorial Service of Commerce the requests of opening on public holidays, and has emphasized that it is in the last instance the Generalitat which authorizes or not that opening.

After emphasizing that this opening is "absolutely voluntary" according to each establishment, Pellicer has pointed out that the City Council has "for a long time" processing these requests. In fact, "for a long time there are food shops that open on Mondays of Patron Major Festivities".

The head of Commerce has lamented "the confusion" that has been generated around this issue, and has stressed once again that "Monday of Major Patron Saint Festivities are still festive."
